Roster Cut Roundup: February 26

Today we had another three “name value” cuts in Anthony Fasano, Kendall Langford and Will Blackmon. Each player is now free to sign with any team and continue their NFL career.

The release of Langford created the most cap space of the releases. He was set to count for $7 million on the Rams salary cap and his release creates $6 million in cap room. Langford had signed a four year, $22 million contract in 2012 and will now count for $1 million in dead cap space. His impact had fallen considerably which made him expendable. The Rams should now have no issues with their cap numbers moving forward.

Releasing Fasano saved the cap strapped Chiefs $1.959 million in cap space. Fasano had signed a four year, $16 million contract in 2012 that included a $4.25 million signing bonus. He was only going to earn $3.1 million, but between the Chiefs cap situation and the emergence of Travis Kelce, it was hard to justify keeping Fasano. He should land with another team looking for a “throwback” type at the position. The Chiefs still need to create around $6 million in cap space if they need to franchise Justin Houston

Blackmon was esentially a minimum salary player for the Jaguars, who project to have over $60 million in cap space, so this move had nothing to do with cap considerations. Blackmon had re-signed with the Jaguars on a low cost two year contract in 2013 and the team will only  take on a $25,000 cap hit with his release.
