New Orleans continued their efforts to get under the 2013 salary cap with two releases today.
Dave Thomas, a run blocking tight end who saw action in about 30% of the snaps last season, will save the Saints $1.7 million in cap space.Thomas was in the final season of his contract.
CB Johnny Patrick, a 3rd round draft pick in 2011, was waived by the Saints. His release saves the Saints $468,655 in cap room. Patrick had two years remaining on his contract but was a seldom used defensive player.
The Saints, who restructured the contract of LB Curtis Lofton last week for cap relief, still have major work to do and are estimated to be about $15 million over the cap.
