With a new group running the Colts this is likely the first of many cuts on the defensive end. Jackson typified the Colts approach over the last few years of running too quickly into older and fading talent, Jackson was released by the Browns in 2014 and the Colts quickly signed him to a four year contract worth $5.5 million a year. He was suspended this year at a time when the Colts were trying to hang in the playoff hunt and that probably did not help his case to remain in Indianapolis. Jackson was ranked 6th in our likely cuts at linebacker and will save the Colts $5.5 million this year.
The Seahawks added a kicker today when they signed former Viking Blair Walsh. We don’t have any contract details yet but this signing could indicate that the Seahawks plan on moving on from kicker Steven Hauschka, who is a free agent and struggled at times this year. Walsh had once been considered one of the better young kickers in the NFL before the wheels began to fall off. The Vikings signed Walsh to a 4 year, $13 million extension in 2015 which made him one of the highest paid kickers in the NFL. That proved to be a big mistake as he didnt even last the entire 2016 season, which was technically the first year of his new contract. The Vikings had paid Walsh a $2.75 million signing bonus as part of his contract. Walsh went unsigned for the last month and a half of the 2016 season.
