Colts Release LaRon Landry

The Colts have announced the release of  safety aRon Landry. Landry becomes the second big name that was released so far this offseason (Michael Oher was the first) following two somewhat disappointing years with the Colts.

Landry was signed to a  four year, $24 million contract in 2013 that probably left some people scratching their heads. Landry had never lived up to his draft status as an elite player and while he was a decent player the Colts pegged him as a a top 10 or better player. Landry’s contract has been a launching point for a number of players thereafter.

Landry, who always struggled with injuries, would miss 4 games in his first year with the team. He was then suspended for 4 games in 2014 due to PED violations. He was a 50% snap type player after that making him expendable.

Landry would have counted for $5.75 million against the salary cap this season. He will now count for $3.5 million, a $2.25 million savings.  Landry is now free to sign with any other team in the NFL.
