Raiders to Release Gardner Minshew

The Raiders have informed QB Gardner Minshew that he will be released at the start of the league year according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Minshew started 9 games for the Raiders last year, going 2-7 as a starter while in the first year of a two year, $25 million contract. Minshew was to count for $14 million on the cap this year and his release will save the team $6.34 million.

Minshew still has $3.16 million in guaranteed salary in his contract which is why the Raiders need to wait until the start of the league year to cut him since technically we are still in the 2024 league year and no team has any cap room remaining for 2024. The Raiders will get an offset for any salary he signs for with another team and I am sure they are hoping it will cover the full amount. If not the team will have spent $15 million for one season with Minshew. Minshew’s dead money figure will be $7.66 million when he is cut. The Raiders are currently 2nd in the NFL in projected cap room for 2025.
