Contract Notes

Philip Rivers signed a four year contract extension worth $83.25 million with the San Diego Chargers on August 17, 2015. Details of the contract are from a report by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. Rivers received $37.5 million in full guarantees, including a $22.5 million signing bonus. The total guarantee is worth $65 million. Rivers entire salary in 2016 will become fully guaramteed on the 2nd day of the waiver period and $11 million of his 2017 salary will become guaranteed on the 2nd day of the 2017 waiver period. In each of the final two years, Rivers will receive a $5 million roster bonus if he is on the team on the 3rd day of each League Year. Rivers has a no trae clause as part of his contract. In 2016 Rivers converted $6 million of his salary into a bonus to create $4.5 million in cap space.

Per Ian Whetstone the Chargers restructured Rivers contract in 2017 by converting $3 million of salary into a signing bonus. The move cleared $2 million in cap space for the Chargers and adds $1 million in cap charges to Rivers' 2018 and 2019 contract years.
