Jets to Move On from Aaron Rodgers

The Jets are planning to move on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers as their new front office and coaching staff look to start over and overhaul the team’s roster. Rodgers will leave the Jets with $49 million in dead money and the Jets brass will have the option to determine if that is all accounted for in 2025 or they defer a large portion of it to 2026.

Rodgers can be released from the Jets as early as February 10th which is when the NFL waiver period officially begins. Given the timing of the leaked news I would believe that this would be the case. If the team did this it would be a $49 million cap charge for 2025. Rodgers would then be free and clear to sign with another team to finish out his career.

The Jets could also utilize a post June 1 designation on Rodgers. This would mean the Jets would need to carry Rodgers on the roster until March and then release him on the start of the new league year which is March 12th. The Jets would then split the cap charges at $14 million in 2025 and $35 million in 2026. In that situation Rodgers cap number for 2025 would remain at $23.5 million from now until June 2nd and Rodgers would be free to sign elsewhere on March 13th.

Removing Rodgers from the team should make it an easy decision to move on from Davante Adams who was brought in last year as a desperation attempt to save the season. Adams release will leave the Jets with $8.3 million in dead money. Releasing Adams saves the Jets $29.9 million in cap room, which would effectively offset the loss of $25.5 million in cap space due to taking all of Rodgers dead money in 2025. The Jets are currently 19th in cap space with about $21 million in estimated cap space for the year.
