Eagles to Release CB Darius Slay

The Eagles have released CB Darius Slay according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic. This is not a surprising transaction as Slay was always considered a likely cut candidate this year as the Eagles look to continue to get younger in the secondary. Slay was set to have a $13.8 million cap number and a $16 million salary with the Eagles this year.

There is a good amount of dead money that exists in Slay’s contract. The number should be about $22.7 million which would mean the Eagles will lose about $9 million in cap room with his release. The Eagles already have two contracts that are written to be a terminated as post June 1 cuts so they would need to change course on one of those contracts if they wanted to use a post June 1 designation to split the dead money between two years ($9.4M in 2025 and the balance in 2026). The likely candidate for that change would be Brandon Graham who could be extended, may decide to retire, or could be released prior to the start of the new league year rather than as a post June designated cut.

As a quick edit, Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that Slay will be a post June 1 designation so the Eagles will be looking at dead money of $9.4 million and gaining about $4.3 million in cap room on June 2nd which can be used to sign rookies or saved for the summer.
