Over the next few weeks I’ll be doing some small previews of the available players in free agency with some very rough guesstimates on salaries. I’ll be factoring in what I believe may be some large premiums that will be available due to the unprecedented amount of cap room that exists in 2017. We’ll start it off with the quarterbacks.

1. Kirk Cousins, Redskins

One of the more interesting possibilities for free agency in some time. Cousins has thrived in the Washington offense for the last two seasons despite the lack of a running game and his two prime targets being 30 years old. There are plenty of questions about Cousins which I wrote about last year, but if a player can prove he can do it for two seasons that questions should disappear. This is the first of a two-part series in which I’ll preview the Free Agency class for 2017 by looking at which positions are the strongest and which are the weakest. This takes into account not only the level of talent available, but also the likelihood that the player actually reaches the market. Terrelle Pryor is one of the most intriguing free agents this year. Pryor is on pace for 75 receptions, 1,000 yards, and 5 touchdowns. Cleveland’s executive team and potentially the general managers for the rest of the league will have to make a decision on what to pay a player that is in the top 25 in the NFL in targets, receptions, and yards after totaling 2 receptions in his first 4 seasons. Five years after being taken in the supplemental draft by the Raiders and after a switch from QB to WR, Pryor is still a huge question mark as he enters unrestricted free agency in a few months.

Martellus Bennett was drafted in the second round (61^st overall) by the Dallas Cowboys in 2008 and was the fourth tight end selected in that draft. In his four years in Dallas, Bennett’s season highs were 33 receptions, 47 targets, 283 yards, and 4 touchdowns. Unfortunately for Bennett, he was stuck behind Jason Witten during Witten’s run of excellence from 2007 to 2012. In that period, Witten never received less than 117 targets in a season and never caught fewer than 79 receptions for 942 yards.

When Bennett’s contract with the Cowboys expired, he signed a one year deal with the New York Giants for $2.5M. In his lone year with the Giants, Bennett set career highs in every receiving category.

Each year, teams across the NFL invest a large portion of their salary cap in Contract Extensions and Free Agent Deals for players who seemingly perform well. Once a team strikes a deal with a player, it is not only important to analyze the performance that justified the new deal, but it is also critical to monitor a team’s return on investment once the player has signed.  That being said, I have conducted a breakdown of the Wide Receiver Market to highlight some trends in relation to the performance of a WR before and after signing a deal and to present a risk analysis between a team signing a WR from the open market or via extension.
