An Offseason Look at the Arizona Cardinals

After a nice start to the season the Arizona Cardinals quickly fell apart and out of the playoff race. It’s a team with a terrific defense that was completely wasted by the failures at the QB position. If there was one team last season that would gone from being a bottom 10 team to a Super Bowl contender just by having a passable QB it was the Cardinals.

Cap Positions

Right now I have the Cardinals around $2.5 million over the 2013 NFL Salary Cap, but I have not accrued any dead money from last season for Arizona yet so … Read the rest

An Offseason Look at the Cleveland Browns

For whatever reason there just seems to be no team more non-descript in the NFL than the Cleveland Browns. It just seems that year after year the team is a meaningless franchise. In the last 10 years they have only had one season with more than 6 wins and their last playoff appearance came in 2002. They are now on their third front office reset in the last five years, turning to Mike Lombardi who has been off the field and in the TV studios for the last 5 years to try to save the team.

An Offseason Look at the Detroit Lions

Coming of the Lions first playoff season in forever expectations were high for Matthew Stafford and company  to continue the ascension, but they came tumbling down to a 4-12 record in 2012 and are staring at wholesale changes in 2013.

Cap Positions

The Lions have been one of the most active teams since the start of the waiver period releasing WR Titus Young, DE Kyle Vanden Bosch, and G Stephen Peterman to slash $8.519 million in cap charges and to move the team about $2.6 million under the cap. With the need to upgrade the entire defense the Lions still … Read the rest

An Offseason Look at the Philadelphia Eagles

After slogging around the AFC for a few days we finally move onto the NFC where the Philadelphia Eagles surprisingly ended up with the worst record in the conference. I will say this for the Eagles. I think for years that they have been one of the best run franchises from a salary cap perspective. They are a tremendous organization in that respect, but I think in the last few years there has been a shift on the personnel side to be far more splashy. It has not hurt their cap one bit, but there is a reason why the … Read the rest

An Offseason Look at the Oakland Raiders

Ah the dreaded (dreadful?) Oakland Raiders. The Raiders have become a model of how not to run a franchise over the last decade. Poor investments all over the place and nothing to show for it. It seems that every season the Raiders have to make cap room to function yet every year they end up nowhere near the playoffs. This is probably the year where they can begin to come out of that hole and make the turn back towards relevancy in the NFL.

Cap Positions

My estimates have the Raiders somewhere around $131 million in cap commitments for 47 … Read the rest

An Offseason Look at the Jacksonville Jaguars

Today we will take a look at the Jacksonville Jaguars, who finished a terrible 2-14 in 2012 and may have the worst roster in the entire NFL. It’s rare in today’s NFL to find a team that does not have at least one standout player, but with the injury to RB Maurice Jones-Drew I think the Jaguars may be that team. Though they do have an owner that seems willing to spend money to try and improve the standing of the team, this may be the toughest job to navigate in the short term.

Cap Positions

I would expect the … Read the rest

An Offseason Look at The Kansas City Chiefs

I’m going to (hopefully) go over all 32 teams rosters and potential cap moves over the next few weeks. We’ll start things off with the Kansas City Chiefs, who own the number 1 pick in the draft. The Chiefs had a miserable season in 2012. Pro Football Focus ranked them to have the 20th ranked offense and 27th ranked offense, Football Outsiders ranked them 31st on offense and 30th on Defense, and in my own efficiency rankings they were 32nd in scoring and 25th in defense. So they need significant overhaul.

Cap Positions

Surprisingly the Chiefs have a high … Read the rest
